RTMC Astronomy Expo: The former Riverside Telescope Makers Conference has a new name for a new millennium. The Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28, tradition continues, however. For information on  fees, meal plans, and camping, go to http://www.rtmc-inc.org.

   
Summer Solstice Celebration 2001: Valley of the Moon Observatory Association and Heart of the Valley Winery Association offer a solstice blowout on Saturday June 23. Events include a daytime Planet Walk, pre-twilight astronomy lectures, a catered dinner, and solar and stellar viewing. Tickets are $75 per person in advance (deadline June 1). White Mountains: Our annual low-oxygen star party will again convene this summer at Barcroft Laboratory, 12,435 feet high in the White Mountains northeast of Bishop, CA, August 16 (Grandview) through 20. Room and board costs $45/day/person. Priority will be given to those staying three or four nights. Call Dave Rodrigues at 510/483-9191 or send a check (payable to Dave) for $45 per person per day. Hidden Hill Observatory: Earnie's Plumbing and Sewer Service will tackle our unpleasant outhouse problem before the hot weather arrives. Work continues on the Marling Telescope, and  new bearings will be in place soon.

Dates and deadlines

   Davis Star Show: More than a dozen astronomical clubs and vendors have joined to sponsor the Davis Star Show: A Festival of Science and Astronomy. On Friday August 24 (4 to 10 p.m.), participants will hear a guest-lecturer presentation, and they can attend a teachers' workshop and astro trade show. Solar scopes will be available for daytime viewing.

   On Saturday August 25, DSS runs from 10 a.m. through midnight, with the star party beginning at
8 p.m. The featured program includes speakers, the trade show, a variety of workshops, solar viewing, and special exhibits. During the evening star party, telescope stations will be dedicated to viewing the constellations, deep-sky objects, the Moon, and all the planets visible during the evening.
