Star Parties

Club News and Notes

Star parties wrap up summer
observing season

TVS ended the summer with a successful open house at Hidden Hill Observatory. At this month's plenary session, the board will plan improvements  for the observatory and an expanded 2001 schedule of club events and public star parties.

Now that school is back in session, we anticipate receiving requests from local primary-grade teachers. Please consider sharing your telescope and a little bit of your time with youngsters eager to explore amateur astronomy. Phil Waide coordinates the club effort to provide scopes and expertise at school star parties. Contact him at waide1@llnl.gov to see what you can do to support this TVS program.

Fall finances

At the September 19 planning meeting, treasurer Mike Anderson reported our financial standing as follows.

   Checking    $2,542.19
   CD #1         $3,646.00 matures 11/17/00
   CD #2         $2,809.79 matures 10/6/00
   CD #3  $2,322.92* matures 11/27/00

*Certificate of deposit #3 will be verified at the general meeting, as this figure is almost certainly lower than the actual amount. CD #2 holds the club's dark sky site key deposits against claim by members who surrender keys.
Additionally, the checking account will be reduced by the costs of printing the August, September, and October newsletters. A more comprehensive financial statement will be offered in the November Prime Focus.

Club leadership nominations now open

Perhaps the biggest news out of the September planning meeting concerns the large number of leadership vacancies to be filled for 2001. Page 5 discusses the open positions in some deatil, and requests you consider serving  as a volunteer officer, or that you nominate another member who is willing and able to help with the club.
