Going, going, gone…

The last of the astronomy desk calendars are still available at $10 each. Additionally, we have a few remaining copies of the
Observer's Handbook. One of these handy guides can go home with you on the 21st for just $13.

Four more join TVS

While some of us were busy sending our (late) renewal checks, four others decided to join the club for the first time. Please welcome Gordon D. Jones, James R. Mathers, Kevin Hemphill, and Rick Sarrica.

MDAS sponsors astro workshops

Mami Berendsen, vice president of Mount Diablo Astronomical Society (serving Concord and Walnut Creek), announces that MDAS will sponsor a series of astronomy workshops. Topics to be included answer such questions as

  • Did the dinosaurs see the same constellations that we do now?
  • Why don't eclipses occur every month?
  • What causes meteor showers such as the Leonids, to happen each year at the same time?

The first workshop is set for May 19, 2000. For information on dates, location, and registration, contact Mami at 925/930-7431, or berendsen@aol.com.

Board considers eyepiece purchases

At the March planning meeting, the board again considered purchasing a full set of "loaner eyepieces" that members could borrow for a month of observing. Lively discussion ensued on the best eyepieces -- sizes and manufacturers -- to be included in this loaner set. A budget has not yet been established for this investment, as the board is more interested in providing a desirable service than in pinching pennies on this project.

At the April 21 general meeting, president Dave Anderson will solicit suggestions from all club members. Then, on Monday April 24, the board will again discuss this topic at length. We invite all club members to comment. To send an e-mail to Dave, contact him at davidand@home.com
