Eclipse tree images Christmas sunrise

This eclipse effect, captured by E. Israel in 1994 on the campus of Northwestern University was also seen across North America on Christmas morning. Hundreds of images of the partially eclipsed sun speckle the leaf shadows of this tree. This phenomenon occurs as sunlight penetrates tiny spaces among leaves and branches, creating the effect of myriad pinhole cameras. (NASA)
