Public relations report for June and July

Frank Rogue doubles as our vice president and our public relations agent with the press. We thank him for the meeting announcements he has placed in
The Independent. He is also working on advanced notifications of our activities in special formats acceptable to other Tri-Valley newspapers.

The six membership contacts directly attributable to Frank's efforts over the past two months include: a teacher inquiring about star parties, a mom asking whether the club was suitable for children, a 4-H leader who had seen a notice in the
Tri-Valley Herald and also wanted star party information, two individuals responding to the story published by The Independent, and a new member who joined using the yellow PR form Frank left at Lumicon.

In many cases, the folks who contact TVS are particularly interested in attending star parties as quickly as possible. Of course, Frank refers them to the web site for a list of upcoming events, and he personally invites them to attend the next scheduled star party. So, keep your eyes and ears open for newcomers who are eager to learn more about astronomy in general and TVS in particular. Please be gracious about answering their questions at star parties and observatory open house events.

Master Mentor still sought

Our proposed Introduction to Amateur Astronomy program is still in search of a champion. Newcomers learn faster and stay involved longer when they have mentors to explain the more arcane aspects of our hobby. The leader of this program would help match experienced members with those who are just learning to observe. So, we are prepared to offer the glorified title of Master Mentor to the member willing to coordinate this effort.

If this volunteer position appeals to you, contact club president Dave Anderson at 510/661-4249, or send an e-mail to davidand@home.com. Of course, you can always publicly proclaim your willingness to serve at the general meeting and ice cream social on August 18.

Stories from the stacks

You have probably already noticed that the laptop used to power the club's library software is up and running again. Please contact librarian Jim Alves if you have entries to update in the system.

TVS thanks member Nancy Freitas and her daughter Corrinne for their donation of astronomy-specific special edition magazines. At the July general meeting, Nancy and Corrinne brought special
