member and great supporter of our activities. For nearly five years, Mike convinced Xerox Corporation to produce Prime Focus at no cost to the club.
An exciting job transfer has moved Mike to the wilds of Westchester County, New York. This leaves TVS to fend for itself in printing the newsletter each month. We very much appreciate the significant contribution that Mike and Xerox have made to the club, as the cost of commercial printing runs $125 to $140 each month, depending on the number of copies needed. Thank you, Mike, for all you have done for TVS over the years. We miss you already and wish you well!
If your employer supports tax-exempt organizations, and you would be willing to oversee the printing of Prime Focus, please notify any board member at your earliest convenience. You may also contact editor Alane Alchorn at 925/ 455-9464 or send an e-mail to her, circlewing@aol.com.
Other newsletter changes
In addition to everything else going on with the newsletter, we have a few other challenges. The retirement of Don Machholtz leaves a huge hole for cometary observers. We are quite interested in finding a regular monthly columnist willing to contribute timely observing notes. The column need not follow Don's format. In fact, the new column may be entirely different, as its author sees fit.
Club members are also encouraged to submit articles or photographs on all aspects of amateur astronomy. If you have enjoyed a particularly rewarding evening of stargazing, why not share that with other club members?
We also hope to inaugurate a new section to help astronomers who are new to the hobby make the most of their observing time. Such a monthly feature might discuss the basics of telescope design, pros and cons of eyepiece selection, basic filter theory, keeping an observing log, and helpful tips to encourage beginning observers.
