Observatory director's report

Chuck Grant reports that the lock on the gate to the observing hill seized tight. At publication time, he was attempting to clean and repair this existing lock. Its specific design is no longer manufactured, therefore a new lock cannot be set to match our existing keys. Our reserve lock also cannot be re-keyed.

At the barbecue (see TVS presents, page 1), Chuck will report on his success in solving this dilemma. If a temporary combination lock has been installed, you may contact a club officer to obtain the combination.

Thanks, Gert

Gert Gottschalk culled a few shareware/freeware astronomical CDs from his collection and donated them to our library. These electronic volumes include solar system objects, Hubble Space Telescope images, and a number of educational astronomical programs.

Welcome to TVS!

During June and July, TVS grew by four family memberships and one individual. At the barbecue, please be sure to extend a warm welcome to Lou Buonomo, Dave and Chere Lenz, the Habib N. Najm Family, David Solnit and Linda Tiffany, and the Brain Kelly Family.

A new double star in the heavens

We note with sorrow the untimely passing of Joe Wujek and his wife Lee in an automobile accident in the state of Washington last month. Carter Roberts reports that Joe and Lee were eulogized on July 23 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Livermore.

Joe was an active and avid amateur who occasionally attended TVS meetings. He served on the Chabot Observatory and Science Center board of directors for many years as the Eastbay Astronomical Society representative. Additionally, Joe was an enthusiastic Chabot volunteer. He and Lee will be much missed.

Patient patrons earn payoff

At the July planning meeting, the board voted unanimously to extend a year of free Patron membership to all existing Patrons. We hope that this partially compensates them for the inconvenience of the down-time on the 17.5-inch Marling Telescope.
