Mount Wilson announces summer program
The Consortium for Undergraduate Research and Education in Astronomy (CUREA) announces its summer program in astronomy and astrophysics at Mount Wilson, from June 16 - 29, 1999. Undergraduate physics and astronomy majors, with junior or senior standing, who are considering a career in science or science teaching are encouraged to apply. Amateur astronomy observing runs may also be considered. Mount Wilson, located in the San Gabriel Mountains above Los Angeles, is renowned for its superb atmospheric conditions, and houses the historic 100-inch Hooker Telescope.
The program will emphasize our present understanding of the Sun, and the Sun's relationship to the astrophysics of all stars. Students will use the Snow Horizontal Solar Telescope (24-inch aperture and 60-foot focal length), its associated powerful grating spectrograph, and the unique atomic-beam solar-oscillation spectrometer. Introductions to celestial photography and darkroom work will also be included.
The application deadline is April 15, 1999. A tuition fee of $1,550 covers all expenses during the two-week program. Students are responsible for the cost of their transportation to Burbank, CA. For full information on this program, see the CUREA website at:
