SJAA sponsors Auction XXI

San Jose Astronomical Association will sponsor its annual swap meet and auction on Sunday, April 8, 2001. As usual, this annual fund-raiser will be held at Houge Park, a city facility in San Jose.

This year's event includes two notable changes. First, the event occurs on a Sunday, to avoid the conflicts with the child-care program that has pre-empted the assembly hall at Houge Park. Second, Auction XXI will be conducted prior to the swap meet, rather than afterward. Any items not sold at auction may be offered at swap.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. (or slightly earlier) to register auction items, which will then be placed on view. Selling begins at noon, and will continue as long as needed. Accounts are settled at the end of the auction by one check to (or from) SJAA, and items may be claimed. Seller pays 10% commission, with a cap of $50 for any one item. Seller sets minimum bid (if not met, the item returns to the seller at no commission).Plan to pre-register. See the web page at www.sjaa.org or e-mail Jim Van Nuland at JVN sjaa.net.

Sellers may bring swap meet items into the hall, at
2 p.m. or perhaps earlier. Each buyer pays the seller.  Sellers track their own sales, and pay a 10% commission to SJAA, as for the auction. SJAA charges no table fees other than a  requested $1 donation for the auction bidder/seller number. Payment may be made by check or cash only, no credit cards. Commissions are tax-deductible, as SJAA is a 501(c)(3) organization.

Gert Goettschalk captures
Venus and local stars

Long-time member and director, Gert Goettschalk, has been busy behind the lens of more than one camera this spring. Fortunately for TVS, he remembers to include the club when he goes shooting. The Venus crescent reproduced above was shot on March 24, during a few clear minutes when the clouds drifted away. Gert used his 80-mm refractor, and remarkably, simply held a digital camera behind the eyepiece. Who needs adapters anyway! At our general meeting on March 9, Gert snapped speaker Jeff Baldwin as he finished setting up "Big Dude," his 40-inch (1 meter) f/3.6. Jeff made a great presentation to a standing-room-only crowd in our alternative meeting room.
