In memoriam


   The amateur astronomy community and the Lawrence Hall of Science lost a dedicated volunteer with the passing in January of John Hewitt. John gave uncounted hours in the cause of public stargazing and the general pursuit of science in the public interest.

   He is particularly remembered for the many telescopes and optics he helped others make so that they could enjoy stargazing on their own.

   To honor John's contributions to public service astronomy, the UC Regents have approved the John Hewitt Memorial fund. It will be used to further his interests in public telescope availability.  Donations payable to UC Regents (put "John Hewitt Fund" on the check memo line) may be sent to :
